A car-free weekend on Lübeck Bay begins with the journey all the way to the accommodation, rather than a list of as many seaside towns as possible. For two nights, one accessible base is often enough. A neighbouring town can be an excursion, but does not need to become part of every day's transport routine.
Check the complete journey before booking
Search for the actual arrival and departure dates. Construction and rail replacement services can change older descriptions of the coastal railway. Check the interchange, luggage route and final section from the stop to the door. A station name alone does not establish convenient beach access.
Compare two possible properties using the same questions: how will you buy food, reach the beach and return after dinner? Accommodation closer to these everyday destinations may be worth more than a lower room rate requiring additional journeys.
Friday: arrive and learn the local area
On arrival evening, a short circuit between the accommodation, beach entrance and supplies is sufficient. Do not carry all your beach equipment simply because the sea is already visible. An early arrival allows more time outside; arriving later can mean just preparing for the next morning.
Settle departure details now too: luggage storage, check-out and the route to the stop. Sunday becomes easier when these questions do not have to be solved between breakfast and the return journey. Recheck a saved connection shortly before travelling in case it has changed.
Saturday: one beach area and one additional wish
The full day can begin at your chosen beach. Add only one further priority, such as a walk in the neighbouring town or a longer meal. If bus or rail travel is involved, plan both directions together. A long coastal walk one way is enjoyable only when the return fits your remaining energy.
In poor weather, keep the radius small. A longer break locally is often more useful than suddenly organising several changes to reach a distant indoor attraction. Additional kilometres are not necessary to rescue the weekend.
Sunday: make departure straightforward
Before leaving, use a familiar route that can be shortened if necessary. A new distant destination quickly creates time pressure, particularly when luggage still needs collecting. Preserve a margin for reaching the platform or replacement bus stop.
The advantage of a car-free weekend is not using the greatest possible number of transport modes. It is choosing arrival and accommodation so that few journeys are needed locally and most of your time is actually spent beside the coast.
