On a car-free Baltic holiday, two addresses may both look attractive: one near the railway station and one near the beach. The better choice depends on which journey you will make most often. Travelling with luggage matters, but it happens only twice; reaching the water may be an everyday activity.
For each property, map three routes: station to front door, front door to a usable beach entrance, and front door to a grocery shop. Use walking routes rather than straight-line distances. A railway, harbour basin or road without a convenient crossing can turn a short gap on the map into a much longer walk.
Beach holidays and sightseeing need different calculations
If you expect to use the same beach and return to the apartment at lunchtime, a short beach route is usually more valuable. Check the surface as well. Deep sand with a pushchair and beach bags is a different prospect from a promenade. A sea-view room may still be some distance from the nearest permitted access point.
If you intend to visit Lübeck, Kiel or other places by train, include the daily journey to the station. A connecting bus can work well when it runs at suitable times. If every outing depends on an infrequent feeder service, the apparent flexibility of the rail holiday becomes more limited. Check early departures and the return after dinner, not just the midday timetable.
Imagine the most difficult journey
Picture arriving in rain. Can you manage luggage and shopping together? Is there somewhere sheltered to wait if the room is not ready? An inexpensive beachfront property loses some appeal if the final stretch with bags is unmanageable. A confirmed transfer can solve the problem, but it should never be assumed.
Then picture an ordinary holiday day. Will every forgotten jacket or extra drink require a long walk back? Is there somewhere to sit along the way? With children or limited walking capacity, this everyday perspective can matter more than the distance from the railway platform.
When both addresses are workable, choose according to the trip's main purpose. A short beach break favours convenient access to the sand; frequent rail outings favour a useful station connection. Somewhere between the two can work if the real routes are good. Check services for your dates in the regional journey planner before treating a map location as a promise of convenience. A slightly less dramatic view may buy you a much simpler daily routine.
