For a November break, a town or city can be a more convenient base than isolated accommodation beside the beach. This is not about fitting in as many museums as possible. A compact setting makes it easier to move between your room, meals, an indoor visit and a walk when the weather allows.
Map an everyday radius
Mark your station or arrival point, accommodation and a simple food-shopping option first. Add two places you genuinely want to visit. If these points form a connected area, the stay remains manageable when a longer coastal outing is cancelled. If they are far apart, an apparent city break can involve a surprising number of transfers.
Lübeck, Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund offer different urban starting points. They are not interchangeable, and none of those names guarantees a short walk from your chosen hotel to every attraction. Check the exact address. An edge-of-town property may suit someone driving, while a central location offers different advantages when arriving by train with a small bag.
Give one indoor visit enough time
For half a day, choose an exhibition whose subject interests you rather than three buildings simply because they are nearby. Check opening days, admission arrangements and any timed tickets. Avoid placing a fixed journey immediately afterwards. You should be able to look longer or take an unplanned break.
Use the walk before or after the visit as a short connection. In suitable weather, extend it into a larger loop; otherwise keep to the direct route. Rain then changes the setting of the day rather than its entire purpose. A harbour visit is an optional addition, not a compulsory part during a warning.
Assess the room for daytime use
In November, you may spend more time indoors than you would in summer. A comfortable place to sit, light for reading and somewhere suitable to hang damp clothing separately can matter more than a balcony. Ask about those specific features rather than relying on the word cosy in a description.
Finally, think through departure day. If checkout is early, you need an arrangement for luggage and the hours before travelling home. One final town walk may fit well; a substantial excursion with an uncertain return is less convenient. The strength of a city base is that a few dependable connections can support a complete short stay.
