Hiring a car for selected days can make sense when most journeys around your base work on foot or by public transport, but a few destinations are difficult to reach. The benefit exists only if collection and return do not create more effort than the excursions save.
Group the necessary journeys before finding a car
Write down which destinations genuinely require a vehicle. If two lie in the same direction, they may fit one day. This does not mean filling the schedule with more stops. A rental day should solve a particular transport need, rather than justify the greatest possible distance driven.
Compare the complete process: reaching the rental station, collecting the vehicle, driving, parking, refuelling or charging and returning it. A cheaper station far outside the resort can make the day considerably longer. Check whether opening hours fit your intended use. An out-of-hours return is a separate arrangement, not an automatically available option.
Read the total cost from the terms
Relevant details include mileage allowance, fuel or charging policy, deposit, excess and additional drivers. Ask about required documents and accepted payment methods. A reservation is of little use if the person collecting the car cannot meet the handover requirements.
ADAC recommends checking rental conditions carefully and documenting the vehicle at collection and return. Record existing damage in the appropriate handover report and resolve discrepancies before driving away. Photographs can support the record, but do not replace discussing the condition with the station.
Leave room for the return
Choose the final excursion stop so the station can be reached with a margin. Do not begin looking for fuel or a suitable charging point only when the deadline is close. Required levels and charges for not meeting them depend on the agreed policy.
If return outside opening hours is permitted, settle key drop-off and documentation beforehand. Photograph the condition and parking location in line with the provider's instructions, keep the records and check the final account afterwards.
A single rental day works especially well with an otherwise manageable holiday base. If a car is needed daily, reconsider the overall combination of location and transport instead of treating each day's hire as an isolated decision.
