A station bearing a seaside resort’s name is not the beach entrance. A town centre, a slope or another bus journey may separate the platform from the water. For a car-free outing, plan the final section as carefully as the train journey from home.
Work backwards from the beach
Choose the intended beach section and its official entrance first. Then identify the appropriate stop or station. Check that the walking route is public throughout. A line on a map crossing hotel grounds or a private campsite is not a confirmed connection. With a pushchair or heavy bags, steps and surfaces matter more than the shortest distance.
If a bus is necessary, record its direction and the stop where you will leave. Similar names on opposite sides of a road can be confusing. Save a map of the final walk so that nobody has to search while standing beside traffic with luggage and beach bags. On Usedom, trains and buses can serve different parts of the island, but this does not imply an equally frequent service to every beach.
Settle the return before unpacking
Check a suitable return journey and an earlier alternative. Use the actual travel date, including weekend and public-holiday differences. A bus running in the morning need not continue at the same interval into the evening. Drying off, changing and walking to the stop are part of the return journey, not additional swimming time.
Reduce items used for only a few minutes. A light backpack leaves your hands free while boarding. Large beach wagons or bulky equipment may be subject to specific rules, so ask the operator. Holding a ticket does not guarantee space for every piece of luggage or a bicycle.
For the first attempt, choose a beach with a simple, manageable approach. Once the connection is familiar, longer stays become easier to organise. If the route from the station remains unclear, ask the local tourist information office about a specifically named entrance. Train travel followed by a short town walk can make an enjoyable outing when the final stretch is treated as a real part of the plan. A nearby toilet and somewhere to wait comfortably also help if the return service does not arrive immediately.
