Wind can be a bigger challenge at a beach picnic than deciding what to eat. A loose napkin disappears, sand reaches the salad and a light wrapper becomes litter before anybody catches it. Plan the place and the packaging together rather than treating them as separate decisions.
Find a permitted place first
Choose somewhere eating and sitting are allowed without obstructing access to the water. Dunes, planted areas and fenced protected sections are not sheltered picnic spots. Keep rescue routes clear too. In a strong breeze, a bench behind the promenade may be more pleasant than sitting directly on the sand.
Position a mat so that bags and containers remain stable. Do not take stones from protected areas to weigh it down. A compact sitting area is enough for a short meal, while a sprawling arrangement makes packing up during a weather change slower. A closed drinking bottle is less vulnerable to blown sand than an uncovered cup.
Open food in small stages
Use containers that can be closed again. Open only the food currently being eaten and replace the lid afterwards. This keeps the remainder protected if a gust arrives unexpectedly. Food that needs refrigeration requires suitable cooling; shade alone is not a dependable substitute.
Bring a way to clean hands as well. Seawater does not replace a suitable washing facility. Set aside a container or secure bag for rubbish that cannot itself blow away. Small pieces of film, fruit stickers and bottle caps are easy to miss. Before leaving, inspect the ground beside the mat as well as the middle of your sitting area.
A beach picnic does not need a fire. Fires are prohibited in protected areas, and local restrictions also apply elsewhere, so avoid improvised grilling spots. Do not feed gulls or other wildlife. Feeding changes their behaviour and often makes the meal more disruptive for everyone. If birds approach, secure the food and give them space rather than offering a piece. The outing finishes more comfortably when everything leaves with you and nobody has to search down the beach for escaped packaging. Keeping the menu simple makes this easier without reducing the pleasure of eating beside the sea.
